Keep your New Years Resolution

How are your New Year’s Resolutions for 2023 going? Did you make one weight related? Or nutrition related? If so, I am rooting for you. Setting resolutions and goals can be helpful but also overwhelming. So overwhelming that many people give up later on and blame themselves for lack of willpower. But guess what…it’s not about willpower. It’s how we structure the goal, and also why we made that goal in the first place. You can keep your New Years Resolution, you might just have to readjust it.

Tips to readjust your goals and keep your 2023 resolution

Here are three tips for goal setting that can help you in your health journey.

Tip 1. Think of your ‘Why’. What is driving that ‘Why’? Is it to lose weight in hopes everyone will stop commenting on your weight? Or is it because you want to feel more energized and feel better in your body? Identifying if the reason is externally focused (get others to stop commenting on your weight) or internally focused (want to feel more energized). You’re more likely to stick with internally focused goals.

Tip 2. Are you giving yourself enough grace? Say your goal is to eat vegetables with every meal. When you don’t meet your goal of eating a vegetable at every meal, do you give yourself grace or blame yourself when you order chicken nuggets at McDonalds? Remember that you are a multi-dimensional human with a busy and stressful life. Eating perfectly every meal is one dimensional and not possible. Focus on progress over perfection.

Tip 3. Create mini goals. If your big goal is to eat veggies with every meal, create small goals that can get you there. Start off with the mini goal of including a veggie to your dinner. And once you’ve done that for a week, start another mini goal of adding a veggie to your afternoon snack. The slow and gradual progress from the mini goals will lead you to your big goal.
